In the old days, hard work was seen as something to be proud of. These days, many kids see work as hard and not valuable. As a single parent, hard work is part of the package. But, how can you teach your kids to have a strong work ethic?

Get your kids involved in the work you do. Let them help with household chores and work that you do outside the home if possible. Since kids learn by example, you have a great opportunity to show them what you can achieve by working hard.

Be sure to set standards for the work that the kids do. For example, if the task was raking leaves, and you see huge piles still in the yard, take your child outside and show them what you expect the yard to look like when the job is done. Teach them to take pride in what they do and to give their best whenever they do a job.

As your child gets older, encourage him or her to get part time work, volunteer outside the home, or preferably, both. Many valuable skills are learned such as managing time, honesty, getting along with others, and reliability. You can mentor your child through any situations that arise when they are still living with you. After they move out, your influence will diminish.

Let your kids know the benefits of a strong work ethic such as self-reliance, respect of other people, and the sense of satisfaction that you get from a job well-done.

Hard work will be important to your child’s success in the future. In fact, teaching them the value of working hard may be one of the best gifts that you can give your child.
