As a single parent, you probably only have a certain number of days each year that you can take off to stay home with sick kids or take them to doctor appointments or worse, you may have to take unpaid time. The tips below will help you to keep your kids from getting sick in the first place.

  1. Teach your kids how to wash their hands properly. This includes scrubbing for at least ten seconds.
  2. Try fun soaps like those in wacky colors or foaming formulas to encourage your kids to wash their hands.
  3. Keep bottles of hand sanitizer in your purse, car, diaper bag, sports bags, etc. and have your kids use it frequently.
  4. While sharing is nice, tell your kids not to share cups. glasses, eating utensils, toothbrushes, or any other items that may have been in contact with another person’s mouth or face.
  5. Don’t let your child have a playdate with another child who hasn’t been fully recovered from an illness for at least 24 hours.
  6. Teach your kids to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze by using their upper sleeve or shoulder. Using their hands is much more apt to allow the spread of germs.
  7. Make sure your children are up-to-date on all vaccines.
  8. Children need at least eight hours of sleep per night. Sleep deprivation can make their immune systems less effective.
  9. A good diet rich in fruits and vegetables will also help keep their immune systems strong.
