Given the video culture we live in today, kids often find the TV or gaming system more fun than doing physical activities. But, childhood obesity is on the rise, and you know that sitting around constantly can’t be good for your children. But, you are a busy single parent. How can you get your kids moving when you are juggling a million other to dos?

You need set an example for your kids. If they see you exercising and preferably enjoying it, they are more likely to imitate you. You need exercise for your mental and physical health, both of which are probably strained by the demands of single parenting.

A good way to get your kids to exercise is to do activities as a family. Maybe you can all take a bike ride together, go rollerblading, or build a snowman in your backyard. You get exercise for you, exercise for the kids, and best of all, quality time with your family. You may have to experiment to find activities that everyone in your family enjoys, but it is worth the effort.

When your kids choose extracurricular activities, require them to pick one that involves physical activity. They could play organized sports, ride horses, swim, etc.

Since kids love video games, take advantage and pick games that involve movement. Dance mats are available for many systems, and you can get exercise videos, too. The Wii is great for getting your kids out of the chairs and moving since you have to in order to play many of the games.

As a single parent, finding the time to add more physical activity to your family’s life can be difficult. The health and mental benefits of exercise are worth it for all of you, and you will instill lifelong habits of physical activity into your children.
