Are your kids bad about leaving TVs and computers on after you have gone to bed? You can put them on timers so that they shut off at a specified time. Special surge protectors can have one device assigned as the master and others as slaves so that if the master device is turned off e.g. the TV, the DVD player, receiver, and video game units shut off, too. Using surge protectors can also help ensure that devices are turned off regularly since you can shut several devices that are plugged into the protector with one switch.
Are your windows drafty? You can apply weatherstripping or attach a special plastic film over them to stop drafts. Using heavy curtains is another option. If you can’t find affordable curtains, you may be able to easily fashion some from fleece since it won’t require hemming and is usually affordable.
If you have rooms that you do not use often, consider closing the heating vents to them during the cooler months. In small rooms, you may be able to close heating vents, too, since they can get too hot if they are left on, and the heat from other rooms may warm the small room enough.
