If you are getting divorced, you family is about to undergo an extremely stressful time. Kids may not know how to ask for comfort even when they are feeling bad. Below are some tips to help soothe them.

Your child’s environment can be critical to your child’s stress levels. If possible, try to keep your child in the same home setting during the divorce. If you cannot, at least make sure that the child has some favorite objects around such as a bed, toys, pictures on the wall, etc. In fact, a picture of your child and your ex could prove to be very comforting since that parent no longer lives in your home.

Be sure that your child has their favorite lovie available wherever they go. Yes, it can be a nuisance to keep up with a ratty teddy bear or holey blanket, but your child needs these items as a source of stability and comfort.

Another way to offer comfort is through soft fabrics. Give your child a soft blanket to snuggle in or some warm flannel PJs in the winter. Make sure any clothes are not too tight as binding clothes can add to your child’s stress without anyone realizing it.

Make your child’s diet rich in comfort foods. Mashed potatoes, homemade macaroni and cheese, smooth foods like pudding, etc., can help take the edge off of your child’s anxiety.

Aromatherapy can also be helpful for some kids. You’ll find antianxiety formulas at your health food stores, or you can use scents such as lavender. If your child is having trouble sleeping, you can put a little scent under their pillow.

Sounds are another stress-reducing method. You can find sound machines that offer soothing nature sounds like waterfalls or rain. You can play relaxing music in the background when you are home.

A furry friend can be a great distraction and confidant. If you do not already have pets, a dog or cat or even a rat could prove to be a great addition to your family.

Exercise is another great stress reliever. Make sure that your kids are getting plenty of physical movement. Since yoga is good for relieving anxiety, consider getting one of the yoga tapes that is targeted to children.

As your kids adjust to your divorce, increased stress and anxiety are normal. By following the tips above, you can help your children more easily weather the storm.
