Online dating services are a fantastic way to meet potential dates. Almost 40 million US singles have used them. But, you need to keep a few online dating safety tips in mind.
1. Be honest in your profile. Yes, you want to present yourself in the best possible light, but do not lie. Especially, post a recent picture. If you do not, your date may at best be disappointed or worse, get extremely upset about being tricked. Ditto for not giving your correct age, marital status, etc.
2. Keep your identity private. Even if you see another’s profile that looks perfect for you, remember that you have no idea who this person really is. Do not give out any information that could help them locate you such as your email address, home address, or home phone number.
3. Beware of people that pressure you to meet immediately. Often, they do not want to give out unfavorable information which they know you will ask about in an email and think that you will be so impressed with them in person that you will overlook the issues. Or, they could have more sinsiter motives.
4. Watch for inconsistencies in profiles or when you are emailing. This can be a red flag that they are lying and having trouble keeping their stories straight.
5. If you get any hint that someone may be depressed or unstable, cease contact immediately. You do not want to become a caretaker or worse, a victim.
6. Watch for too much too soon. If someone starts giving you their complete life story immediately or acting like you are a couple before you have even met, this person is probably not safe.
While online dating can be a great way to meet people, you need to be alert to potential problems to avoid wasting your time or compromising your safety.
