Single Parent Travel Tips - Taking Your Kids on Airplanes

..................

Single Parent Travel can sometimes involve airplane trips with the kids. You may cringe at the thought of your kids being confined for long periods with no chance to let the kids down to run off some of that energy. With some planning, your flight can be a success and maybe even enjoyable.

First, make your reservations in advance so that you can pick your seats. Even though bulkhead seats offer more room, you won't have a place to store your bags under the seat in front of you. If you need to retrieve something, you will have to get your bag from the overhead bin. So, you may want to consider aisle seats in a section with seats in front of you. If you want to put your infant in a carseat, you will need to reserve a seat for him or her unless you want to take a chance on open seats being available on the flight. Window seats can be good for kids since many enjoy watching the airport while on the ground and the clouds or the ground below when aloft. If possible, book a direct flight so that you don't have to worry about changing planes.

Bring your own food. Do not count on the availability of kid-friendly meals and snacks. Finger foods work well. Avoid foods that could lead to sticky messes.

Bring at least one, preferably two changes of clothes for your kids in your carryon baggage. An extra shirt for you is also a good idea. A change of underwear for everyone is a must. Then, if a mess is made or worse, your luggage is lost, you don't have to suffer or buy new clothes until you get your luggage.

Prepare a bag for each child that includes small toys, books, and other items to keep them occupied during the flight. You may want to bring a few new toys to help hold their interest longer. Video game units or portable DVD players offer hours of entertainment.

Dress yourself and the kids in comfortable clothes. Remember that you all will be sitting for long periods, so make sure that the waistbands are loose.

Pillows and blankets may be available on the airplane, but for hygiene purposes, it's best to bring a small pillow and throw of your own to use.

By planning ahead and following the tips listed above, your flight should go as smoothly as possible for you and your kids.
